ArmInfo. Former head of the staff of the President of Armenia Armen Gevorgyan continues to remain in the status of the accused in the March 1, 2008 case. The head of the Special Investigation Service (SSS) of Armenia Sasun Khachatryan stated this on August 30, responding to the question of ArmInfo.
According to him, the preliminary investigation is ongoing and so far Gevorgyan's status has not been reviewed.
Ex-Deputy Prime Minister of Armenia Armen Gevorgyan was charged on March 1, 2008. He was charged with part 2 of Article 332 (Hindrance to the administration of justice and investigation) of the Criminal Code of Armenia. According to the article, Gevorkyan can be sentenced to 6 years imprisonment. As a measure of restraint, a written undertaking not to leave the country was elected. The reason for the initiation of the criminal case was information that the member of the Constitutional Court Valery Poghosyan was pressured to defend the position acceptable to the authorities when considering the claim of the opposition to appeal the results of the presidential elections. It turned out that the attempt to exert pressure was carried out by Gevorgyan along with another person.
Recall that after the presidential elections on February 19, 2008 in Armenia a series of protests took place, the participants of which expressed disagreement with their official results, according to which the winner was recognized as Serzh Sargsyan. Street actions were organized by supporters of the first president of Armenia, Levon Ter-Petrosyan, who then also claimed a top position. During the clashes between the protesters and law enforcement agencies, eight demonstrators and two police officers were killed, 33 police officers were hospitalized. Around 230 people applied to the doctors for help.
