ArmInfo. The Head of the EU Delegation to Armenia, Piotr Switalski, declined to comment on the candidature for the presidency of Armenia presented by the head of the Republican Party, acting President Serzh Sargsyan.
"This is your internal question: the Armenian society should evaluate the candidacy of the new president, I believe that I am among the gathered, the last person who should comment on this issue," Svitalsky told Armenian journalists.
On January 19, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan officially announced RA Ambassador to Britain, former Prime Minister of Armenia Armen Sargsyan, the candidate of the ruling Republican Party for the presidency of the country. The presidential elections in Armenia will be held on March 2, the president will be elected by the deputies of the parliament with 3/5 votes. In the case of the second and subsequent rounds, the qualification for election will be lowered. Armen Sargsyan himself has not yet given his consent to his nomination for the presidency.
The term of office of Serzh Sargsyan expires on April 9. December 6, 2015 in Armenia held a referendum on the transition of the republic from the presidential form of government to the parliamentary. According to the amendments to the Constitution, the President of Armenia is elected for a period of seven years not by direct elections, but by the parliament. The new constitution sharply reduces presidential powers in favor of the head of the Cabinet, who also is the commander in chief during war.
