ArmInfo.In the US House of Representatives, House Resolution 354 was presented today, regretting the violent actions of Turkish security forces of the Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan against peaceful demonstrators in front of the Turkish Embassy in Washington.
Mr. ROYCE of California (for himself, Mr. ENGEL, Mr. MCCARTHY, and Mr. HOYER) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs. The resolution particularly says "Condemning the violence against peaceful protesters outside the Turkish Ambassador's residence on May 16, 2017, and calling for the perpetrators to be brought to justice and measures to be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future." The document also notes that this is the third case of violence by security personnel of the Turkish leader in the United States. Congressmen emphasize that all those Turkish officials who participated in the riots opposite the Turkish Embassy in Washington on May 16 of this year should be punished according to US laws. The authors of the resolution also express concern over the growing authoritarianism in Turkey and urge Washington to take measures to promote the protection of freedom of speech and civil society in that country.
Whereas on May 16, 2017, President Donald J. Trump hosted President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, a longstanding NATO ally, for an official meeting at the White House to discuss counter-terrorism cooperation and bilateral issues;
Whereas on the evening of May 16, 2017, over two dozen protesters gathered outside of the Turkish Ambassador's residence in Washington, D.C., to demonstrate opposition to Turkish Government policies;
The incident caused a negative response in the social and political circles of the United States. In fact, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that he called the actions of Turkish law enforcers unacceptable and promised to bring to justice all those responsible.
Ankara, in response to the actions and statements of Washington, summoned Serdar Kilik, his ambassador to the US, for a consultation.
