ArmInfo. Armenia supports Russia's actions in Syria, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan says in an interview with Rossiya Segodnya (Russia Today) director general Dmitry Kiselyov.
"We fully support the fact that Russia helps the Syrian government at the latter's request. It is the legal right of the Syrian state to ask for help and it is the legal right of Russia to render that help," he stresses.
Sargsyan notes that Yerevan wants the Syrian problem to be settled as soon as possible, but it should be settled by people of Syria. He points out that there are still nearly 20,000 Armenians in Syria. He also recalls that some 20,000 Armenians moved from Syria to Armenia. "We are trying to solve their housing problem and to place them in a job," he says.
According to the Armenian Diaspora Ministry, over the past 5 years, the Armenian community in Syria shrank from 120 thsd to 20 tshd people. As many as 20 thsd Syrian Armenians have moved to Armenia and 13 thsd of them have become citizens of Armenia. The Aleppo Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church says that there are still nearly 10 thsd Armenians in the city.
