According to the Armenian Embassy in Russia, 50 citizens of Armenia are still entrapped on the Georgian Military Road, because the Upper Lars checkpoint is closed.
Part of the vehicles made a U-turn and headed for other highways, and most of the Armenian citizens were evacuated to Yerevan by the aircraft of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, but 144 people are still waiting for the Russian-Georgian border to open. They are provided with tents, meals and other essentials.
To recall, on June 23 Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Lars road was closed because of a mudflow. The only overland road linking Armenia to Russia lies through the Upper Lars checkpoint on the Russian-Georgian border. According to the officials of Georgia, the opening of Upper Lars is scheduled for July 15 unless the weather conditions hinder the road rehabilitation.
Six flights of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry's aviation have delivered 246 people to Armenia and 13 Russian citizens to Russia. The flights have been carried out under the relevant agreement between the Russian and Armenian Governments.
