The new Constitution gives no opportunity to the incumbent authorities to retain their grip on power, Armen Rustamyan, the head of ARFD parliamentary faction, told a news conference on August 24.
The politician believes that the Constitutional Reform is needed, as the effective Constitution no longer contributes to any positive changes in the country. "After the Constitutional Reforms, Armenia will attain a new quality," he said. The political added that the new Constitution rules out single-party rule too. Aghvan Vardanyan, a representative of ARFD Supreme Body, in turn, said the ruling Republican Party will not be in power in three years. "In 1995, the first Constitution was adopted. Movement said then it would be in power until 2020, but lost power in three years. In 2005, a new Constitution was adopted and the second president Robert Kocharyan also said he would be ruling for a long period of time, but left politics in 2008. Now, the ruling party says the same. If the draft is passed, RPA will not be in power in three years," he said.
To recall, on August 20, the Commission for Constitutional Reform approved the draft Constitutional Reforms with enclosed substantiations and submitted it to President Serzh Sargsyan, who, in turn, submitted it to the parliament on August 21. The president plans to hold discussions with the political forces over their approaches to the Constitutional amendments included in the draft document.
