The Bishops' Synod is being conducted at the Mother See Holy Etchmiadzin with participation of the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II and Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia Aram I.
The total of 76 archbishops and 58 bishops take part in the Synod.
The Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia Aram I stressed that the 100th anniversary of Armenian Genocide will be marked by two important events.
"The 100th year of Genocide must become a crucial milestone in the development of our nation's history. For 100 years we remembered and reminded others about the Genocide; now it is time for new demands, time for new colors in our history. It is absolutely important to remember the 100th Anniversary, organize events, remember our martyrs, however, I think there should be two important events. First, we should canonize the martyrs of Genocide as the martyrs of the faith and of the country. Second, we must organize initiatives in Armenia and the Diaspora that illustrate firm intention of Armenian people to consistently leverage our position. We cannot be silent when the Western Armenia, Cilicia and the churches belonging to Armenians are in occupation," said Aram I.
For his part, Karekin II added that the issue of canonization of the Armenian composer Komitas was also involved in the agenda of the Synod.
