It is too early to speak about any regional union of Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan. Such statements are nothing but propaganda. The remarks came from Turkologist Ruben Melkonyan in response to ArmInfo's question about the latest meeting of the above three countries' leaders in Nakhijevan.
Melkonyan is sure that the situation in the region is not favorable for establishing any new alliances or military-political blocs. They, probably, try to demonstrate Armenia once again that it is isolated from the regional processes. They drag Georgia into these processes to make them look impartial and balanced. "Ankara and Baku try to play on Georgia's emotions and make speculations on Armenia's alleged territorial claims to Tbilisi. However, President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan has repeatedly hinted that such talks are absolute nonsense," Melkonyan said.
He underlined the fact that the meeting in Nakhijevan and the talks on establishment of a new union followed Azerbaijan's sabotage attacks on the Line of Contact and their grave consequences for Baku. "Baku's military and diplomatic defeat makes it create a union against Armenia. However, I don't think, Azerbaijan will manage to do that," the expert said. Melkonyan links the given idea also with Armenia's intention to access the Eurasian Economic Union and Georgia's plans to integrate into Europe and join NATO, the alliance where Ankara has a significant role.
