Yerevan should not be guided by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's statement about the impossibility of Armenia's recognition of Artsakh, Zaruhi Postanjyan, Head of the Heritage Party Faction, co-author of the bill "On Recognition of the Republic of Artsakh", said at a press conference in Yerevan on May 5.
"We cannot be guided by the statements of other countries' foreign ministries, because we should be guided by our national interests only," she said. At the same time, Postanjyan cannot say whether the Parliament will approve the bill or not. "Many lawmakers do not act according to their conscience. They do what their top leadership tells them to do. Consequently, it will be hard to gain the desirable results without any public pressure," she stressed. The MP is convinced that this will not at all affect the peace process, which, she says, does not exist. "There is no alternative to recognition of Artsakh," she said, adding that he has already received calls from other countries' foreign ministries, which express willingness to recognize the NKR after Armenia does it.
To note, when speaking of the debates on recognition of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with RIA Novosti: "The issue is not being discussed by Armenia. It is the proposal of only two lawmakers". He added that the Armenian Government is calming passions. The Government should prepare a conclusion on the bill and that there is no need to panic, he said.
Earlier on Thursday, it was reported that on May 5 the Armenian Government approved a conclusion on the bill "On Recognition of the Republic of Artsakh" submitted by opposition MPs Zaruhi Postanjyan and Hrant Bagratyan. The Government has submitted the bill for approval of the Armenian Parliament. The rationale for the bill is the outcome of the discussions on the issue between representatives of Armenia and Karabakh.
Earlier, Zaruhi Postanjyan had submitted a similar bill twice, but the parliamentary majority killed the bills saying that recognition of the NKR by Armenia would stop the peace talks. For his part, Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia Shavarsh Kocharyan has recently said that Armenia will recognize the NKR if Azerbaijan resumes its large-scale aggression.
