Today, we are here in Tsitsernakabert to honor the memory of the victims of mass deportation and massacres that were perpetrated during the last years of the Ottoman Empire, US Ambassador to Armenia, John Heffern, told journalists today when visiting the memorial to the victims of the Armenian genocide.
He is confident that in several hours President Barack Obama will make a strong-worded statement on April 24. The Ambassador assured that Obama will condemn the events as the worst atrocities of the twentieth century. It will be a strong-worded statement, he said. Mr Heffern emphasized once again that Washington is for normalization of the Armenian-turkish relations as soon as possible.
He also added that earlier the USA supported signing of the protocols between Ankara and Yerevan, and thinks it is necessary to open the border and establish diplomatic relations between the two countries. However, the Ambassador declined to comment on Erdogan's statement made on 23 April.
