President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan will submit a draft constitutional reform to the Executive Body of the Republican Party of Armenia in two weeks. The draft will be approved, a local Zhoghovurd (People) newspaper writes.
According to the source, members of the Committee to prepare the constitutional reform are currently working on the text independently. Furthermore, the paper writes, every member of the Committee received special charges and no one in the Committee knows what his colleague is working on. According to the source, such an approach ensures that the constitutional changes remain secret before the final text is published.
To recall, the Presidential Committee for Constitutional Reform has made public a preliminary concept of the project of constitutional reforms that feature transition to the parliamentary system of government in Armenia. The document, particularly, calls to expand the parliament's supervisory powers, authorize the legislative body to elect the president for a 7-year term. Sargsyan assures he does not seek the prime minister's post. Armenia celebrates the Constitution day on July 5. The Basic Law was passed on July 5 1995 and then amended on Nov 27 2005 under president Robert Kocharyan through a constitutional referendum.
