It is for Armenia to decide how and in what direction to develop its security vector, Jasper Wieck, the head of the political department of permanent representation of the Federal Republic of Germany in NATO, said at a press conference in Yerevan on May 22.
He said that the cooperation with NATO does not restrict partnership with other structures. For instance, Armenia has partner relations with NATO and at the same time it is a CSTO member. This does not create problems, he said. Wieck pointed out that NATO provides the tools for cooperation, but Armenia itself chooses the tools it needs.
He stressed that Armenia is interested in peacekeeping cooperation with NATO. 120 Armenian servicemen are taking part in the peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan, 35 more servicemen - in Kosovo. There are also Armenian peacekeepers in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. The German official noted that such activities of Armenia contribute to strengthening of the partnership.
Jasper Wieck supposes that Armenia seeks to enhance the professional skills of its servicemen.
He also thinks that Armenia is interested in implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution S/RES/1325 (on women and peace and security - editor's note).
