The Armenian authorities do not fear any movements coming out against the constitutional reforms, Speaker of Armenian Parliament Galust Sahakyan told journalists on September 1.
He said that the ruling regime is concerned about the public's reluctance to hold the reforms rather than the movement initiated by the opposition. "The public has already realized what the opposition is and now it should realize what these movements and their "no" outcries are," said the Speaker.
To note, earlier the You Won't Pass It initiative announced its intention to hold a big forum with participation of political and public forces to discuss the further steps of those coming out against the reforms. The initiative is also going to hold rallies in the provinces and to present the threats hidden in the draft reforms.
To recall, on August 20, the Commission for Constitutional Reforms approved the draft constitutional reforms and the rationale, and then submitted them to Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan. On August 21, Serzh Sargsyan submitted the draft reforms for consideration of the Parliament. The President held consultations with the representatives of the Prosperous Armenia Party, Orinats Yerkir Party, ARF Dashnaktsutyun, Pan-Armenian National Movement, Free Democrats Party, Christian Democratic Union, and other forces. The Armenian National Congress and the Heritage Party rejected the invitation to attend the consultations.
