Note that the Independence Day of Armenia is the main state holiday of the country. This date is celebrated on September 21st. The Soviet Union collapsed in August 1991 after a failed coup attempt in Moscow. Like some republics of the disintegrating Soviet Union, Armenia declared its sovereignty by accepting the supremacy of the Armenian Constitution over the USSR Constitution. On August 23, 1990, the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR adopted the Declaration on State Sovereignty of Armenia, proclaiming the abolition of the Armenian SSR and the creation of the Republic of Armenia. A referendum was organized in Armenia on September 21, 1991, during which the inhabitants of Armenia voted by an overwhelming majority to secede from the USSR. Thus, after 70 years of Soviet rule, Armenia became an independent state. In October 1991, the first presidential elections were held in Armenia. On December 21, 1991, Armenia joined the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
