ArmInfo. After interrogation of a number of persons, the Investigative Committee sent criminal proceedings to the prosecutor in the case of the death of a Georgian citizen Poghos Poghosyan in September 2001. On October 30, Chairman of the RA Investigative Committee Hayk Grigoryan stated this in an interview with reporters. "Whether the new data is sufficient to establish a new criminal case or not, the prosecutor's office will decide," he said, indicating a number of testimonies.
The resonant tragedy occurred in the cafe "Poplavok" ("Float") in the center of Yerevan. Then Poghos Poghosyan was killed in the cafe's toilet, he was beaten to death by one of the guards of the second President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan, Aghamal Harutyunyan, for allowing himself to greet the head of state inappropriately <Hi Rob>.
As the media wrote, Poghosyan and Kocharyan were familiar from student days. According to the official version, Poghosyan stumbled during a brawl and hit his head on a tiled floor. Poghosyan later died from his head injuries. Ex-guard Kocharyan was then charged with criminal negligence and causing death by negligence, sentenced to two years in prison on probation. The country's public expected from the head of state a reaction to the incident, but it was not.
A new investigation is being conducted on the basis of recent testimony of British citizen Stephen Newton. The last one on that fateful day was in the "Float" and, as he told the Armenian media, he saw with his own eyes how Aghamal Harutyunyan and other persons cruelly beat Poghosyan.
The information that Newton reported, according to the Prosecutor General, can prove that a much more serious crime has been committed - aggravated murder. In addition, in the testimony of the Briton there is information about the participation of other people in the commission of the crime.
