The Office of the Human Rights Defender of Armenia over the past year reviewed a number of provisions in the field of human rights in the army, taking into account the specifics of military life. This was stated by the RA Ombudsman Arman Tatoyan at the meeting of the council of experts on the rights of soldiers at the office of the Human Rights Defender on June 8.
He noted that last year a number of achievements were recorded in this sphere in cooperation with the Ministry of Defense. In particular, many achievements were recorded within the framework of the Council of Europe's program "Strengthening the application of European standards in the field of human rights in the Armed Forces of Armenia." According to Tatoyan, the role of public organizations is very important in this sphere. The Ombudsman also said that cooperation with the Investigative Committee, the Prosecutor's Office and the Council of Europe was very important.
"Together with the Council of Europe, we worked on the development of the program" Strengthening the application of European standards in the field of human rights in the Armed Forces of Armenia. "Special attention was paid to the complaints of soldiers who, in particular, concerned medical care, in which case we asked soldiers to undergo a second examination> , said Tatoyan.The Ombudsman stressed that suicide is a big problem in the army.
In turn, the head of the Yerevan office of the Council of Europe, Natalia Vutova, said that this program is aimed at improving the provision of human rights in the army. "The state is obliged to ensure the protection of human rights, including in the army," Vutova said.
The head of the program, Andrey Yesin, in a conversation with the ArmInfo correspondent noted that this project in the Council of Europe is unprecedented.
