ArmInfo. Establishment of Armenian-Russian Joint Military Group is the result of 25 years of normal cooperation between Russia and Armenia, Director of Caucasus Institute Alexander Iskandayan is convinced.
At the same time the political scientist thinks that creation of the group is one of the components of the attempt to re-establish the disrupted balance in the region, which had existed before April this year.
"Certainly, the group can not directly relate to Nagorno Karabakh, which is a different state. However, it is quite evident that Armenia is the one to ensure Karabakh's security" Iskandaryan stated on December 5 at the press conference in Yerevan.
He also stated that it is impossible to replace the current system of security with another one, as the European Union ensures security through NATO and Turkey is its member. Consequently, we have no other alternative.
To recall, on November 30 Armenia and Russia's Defense Ministers Vigen Sargsyan and Sergey Shoygu signed an agreement on joint Military Group.
To note, on November 14 Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a Resolution approving the proposal of Medvedev's Government on setting Russian-Armenian military forces alignment in the Caucasus sector of joint security area.
According to Draft Statutes on Joint Military Alignment, it's commander will be assigned by the Supreme Commander of Armenia within the concordance with the Supreme Commander of Russia. Regularly the group will be under the command of Armenia's General Military Staff, and in combat conditions - under the command of Southern Military District Head. Both sides will provide material, technical and financial items of their parts independently.
"This agreement is not aimed against any third countries," the preamble of the Draft states. This Agreement is planned to be signed for five years with an extension by default, if no one of Parties expresses a intention to cancel.
