ArmInfo. The reason why there is no Armenian representative as CSTO Secretary General should be looked for in the discrepancies between the authorities of Armenia and Russia, ex-foreign minister of Nagorno-Karabakh, independent analyst Arman Melikyan has told ArmInfo.
On Friday Yerevan hosted the meeting of the CSTO Collective Security Council and Belarus assumed the CSTO chairmanship. Following the 3-hour meeting of the CSTO leaders behind the close doors, over 20 documents were signed, however, Nikolay Bordyuzha remained the CSTO Secretary General.
"I have no unambiguous answer to the question why the representative of Armenia was not appointed to that post. I do not think the reason is the lack of an acceptable candidate. It is most likely inexpedient to appoint a representative of Armenia as CSTO Secretary General or Russia does not need the candidate suggested by Yerevan for some reasons," he says.
When commenting on the possible reasons of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev's absence from the meeting, the analyst says the opinion that Nazarbayev is one of the icons of Turkic nationalism is wrong. To note, the meeting in Yerevan was attended by the Presidents of Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan, while Kazakhstan was represented by the Prime Minister.
"I would refrain from any details and I would only note that Turkey - particularly its incumbent Administration - is the key threat to Nazarbayev in person and to his cronies. I have all relevant grounds to claim that Astana perfectly realizes this with all that it implies," Melikyan says.
