ArmInfo. Today, the world is preoccupied with other problems: the impact of the coronavirus on the global economy, the US presidential elections, relations between the US and China. Armenian President Armen Sarkissian stated this in an interview with CNBC TV channel, answering a question about whether the parties to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict will manage to gather at one table.
According to the President, unfortunately, the issue is not given due international attention. The international community must realize that if it does not intervene now, the Caucasus will become another big problem for them.
Answering a question about the possibility of turning the region into another Syria and big problems with gas pipelines, Armen Sarkissian urged not consider this issue in only one dimension. "The world lives not only with energy, it is much more complicated, there are national interests, stability, trade, logistics and many other issues. We cannot limit relations between countries only to energy. About ten years ago, I chaired the energy group of the Euro-Atlantic Security Initiative, and I do understand the potential of energy, but we cannot simplify it that much. The RA President expressed hope that the Caucasus will not become a new Syria. "I hope not, because it will be a great tragedy for everyone in the world. You mentioned that 150 thousand people live in Karabakh, but you did not mention that they are Armenians, it does not matter if it is 150 thousand or 250 thousand. Nagorno-Karabakh or Artsakh was a part of historical Armenia for millennia. It has always been inhabited by Armenians. It is a beautiful mountainous country with brave and proud people, Armenians.
Even in Soviet times, 90% of the local population were Armenians. Armenians associate the whole issue of Nagorno-Karabakh with history. They see this as another attempt by Turkey to commit genocide with the help of Azerbaijan. This is unacceptable for Armenians. The struggle will continue, the Armenians will prove that the problem will not be solved by force. Whether you like it or not, we must return to the negotiating table. If you look at the activities of the current Turkish government, it seems that there are 360-degree problems around it: in the Mediterranean, in Greece, in Libya, in Iraq. They create problems everywhere. They claim that Armenia is a threat to the international energy pipeline, which is absolute nonsense. This pipeline has existed for over 20 years. If we have not done this for 20 years, why do we want to do it now, what is the goal? ", the President of Armenia noted.
