ArmInfo.Vahram Avetisyan, a candidate for a judge of the Constitutional Court of Armenia, submitted to the Chairman of the RA National Assembly an application to withdraw his consent to be elected to this position. Avetisyan himself wrote about this on his Facebook page.
"Once again, I would like to note that one of the most important tasks of our state is the formation of an independent, accountable, predictable judiciary, enjoying authority in society and staffed by professional judges. The desire to contribute to the solution of these problems was due to my acceptance of the proposal to run for a judge of the Constitutional Court. However, after the meeting with the deputies of the "My Step" faction and further discussions, it became obvious to me that the approaches and views of some of the deputies regarding the role of the Constitutional Court, political apathy and independence of the CC judge are not in tune with my approaches and views, and in some cases are unacceptable to me.
Therefore, today I presented to the President of the National Assembly a statement to withdraw my consent to be elected to this position. At the same time, I express my gratitude to the Government for nominating my candidacy for the position of a judge of the Constitutional Court, and I wish the judicial and legal reforms carried out in the Republic of Armenia a successful course for the benefit of the citizen of the Republic of Armenia and our homeland, "Avetisyan noted.
Earlier, Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Ararat Mirzoyan signed a law on amendments to the law "On the Constitutional Court", which was adopted on June 30. According to them, the powers of all CC judges are limited to 12 years. After the adoption of the amendments, three judges who had worked for more than 12 years were dismissed from their posts: Alvina Gyulumyan, Hrant Nazaryan and FeliCC Tokhyan. The chairman of the court, Hrayr Tovmasyan, has become an ordinary judge. New judges will now be elected instead. One candidate is proposed by the government, the second - by the president, and the third - by the General Assembly of Judges. The government has nominated Doctor of Law, Professor Vahram Avetisyan. At the general meeting of judges, the chairman of the RA Court of Cassation Yervand Khundkaryan was elected as a candidate for CC judge. Arthur Vagharshyan, nominated by the President, is Doctor of Law, Professor.
