ArmInfo. 28 years ago today, our people made an important victory, one of the most important during the liberation struggle by liberating Shushi. On May 8, at the Yerablur Military Pantheon, after laying flowers at the memorial to the heroes of the liberation war, President of Armenia Armen Sarkissian said in an interview with reporters.
"Today I visited the heroes of our liberation struggle. Symbolism is very deep: how did it happen that 28 years ago today our people made an important victory, one of the most important victories of the liberation struggle by liberating Shushi. If we compare the liberation of Shushi with the Second World War, it was the same as the battles in Stalingrad and Kursk. They just broke the logic of war and opened a path to victory>, The RA President emphasized.
Speaking about the 75th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War, Sarkissian remembered that 300.000 Armenians were killed for the sake of that victory. Adding that half of the 600,000 Armenians who went to the front did not return home, the President noted their memory is always with us. "Our people gave more than 100 heroes of the Soviet Union, five marshals: Surely, it was impossible to defeat this people, because these people were one of the leaders of the anti-fascist struggle, and surely it was also impossible to defeat that people in the liberation battle.
During the whole period of the liberation fight, and especially today, both the organizers of the Shushi liberation, the fallen heroes and those who live today, no matter where they are, what position they hold, what they do, whether are with their families or went to Shushi, they all are heroes. Such heroism doesn't grow old, it's endless. We are truly a victorious people both in the Second World War and the liberation fight>, Sarkissian summed up.
To note 28 years ago today, on May 8, the city of Shushi was liberated. Military operations were carried out in four directions. Arkady Ter-Tadevosyan led the operation, called "Wedding in the Mountains". The liberation of Shushi was a turning point in the Karabakh war. It is from here that Azerbaijanis fired on the capital of Karabakh - Stepanakert, as well as the nearest villages.
The military operations to liberate Shushi are almost flawless in terms of development and implementation, a unique military operation that lasted 26 hours, and on May 9, Shushi was already liberated. In the battles for the liberation of Shushi, the Armenian army lost 57 people killed, and Azerbaijanis - 250-300 people killed and 600-700 wounded. Another 13 people were captured.
