New biometric passports and ID cards in Armenia: pricing and issuance details

ArmInfo. Starting this autumn, citizens of the Republic of Armenia will be able to apply for new biometric passports and ID cards under a modernized civil  documentation system. Nelly Davtyan, Acting Head of the Migration and Citizenship Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, announced  the updated fee structure and procedural guidelines during a press conference on August 14, 2026.

She also noted the new passport will cost 28,650 drams (compared to  the current 25,000 drams) and will carry a validity period of 10  years, while the new ID cards will cost 5,950 drams with a validity  period of 5 years.  According to the new regulations, parents may  voluntarily obtain ID cards for children under 16. However, upon  reaching 16 years of age, obtaining the new biometric passport  becomes mandatory. A valid ID card serves as a prerequisite for  acquiring the passport.

With the rollout of the new biometric system planned for this autumn,  citizens can choose to replace their current documents ahead of  expiration, or continue using their existing documents until they  expire. This flexibility applies to both passports and ID cards.

Davtyan also stated that applications will be processed through 14  offices operated by the private contractor that won the tender for  the system's deployment. The waiting time for document  issuance following application submission and data verification by  the State Population Register is not expected to exceed two weeks.
