As compared to the 1990s, Armenia is experiencing improvement of the ozone layer, Karine Danielyan, Head of the Association for Sustainable Human Development NGO, said at a press conference on September 16.
The expert noted that the ozone layer has been explored in Armenia since 1992. The exploration is conducted in Yerevan at the height of 1113 meters, in Sevan at the height of 1927 meters ands on Mount Aragats at the height of 2070 meters. The exploration has demonstrated that the ozone layer has been improved since 1990s. In 1993 the ozone level over Armenia made up 286 Dobson units, but now it makes up over 300 Dobson units.
Danielyan explains this by the fact that a number of plants, which emitted polluting and ozone-depleting substances into the atmosphere, stopped their activities in the 1990s.
To note, in 1999 Armenia joined the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer.
Experts say that by 2030 the emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere may total 20 thsd tons of CO2 unless any preventive measures are taken.
To note, the United Nations' International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is celebrated on September 16 every year.
