At the initiative of the Armenian Ministry of Transport and Communication, First Deputy Minister of Transport and Communication of Armenia Arthur Arakelyan and CEO of South Caucasus Railway CJSC Sergey Valko visited the Armash terminal in Yeraskh on December 3. Gurgen Nikoghosyan, the director of Manana Grain and Manana Stone, accompanied the guests.
The guests familiarized themselves with the technological process of unloading, storing, cargo handling, storage facilities and storage conditions. The terminal is located 300 km from the Armenian-Iranian border. Its storage capacity is up to 15 thsd tons, and it can accept up to 500 containers and has a big potential for cargo servicing. The project for cargo servicing elaborated by the Armash specialists is to contribute to restoration of Armenia's transit potential with the use of the SCR infrastructure.
It should be noted that the SCR has already accumulated successful experience in cargo traffic by both containers and railcars and at the moment the traffic geography covers 75 countries. The cooperation with the Georgian railroaders is also successful - since 2009 the Karmir Blur-Poti container train has been running no less than twice a week. As compared to 2008, the SCR cargo traffic by containers has increased by 80%. The company is sure that the project of implementation of cargo carriages in Armenia with the use of Armash terminal capacities will be effective and will make it possible to boost the cargo traffic by rail and to make Armenia a transit country.
South Caucasus Railway CJSC is a 100% subsidiary of the Russian Railways JSC and the concessional manager of Armenian Railways under the 13 Feb 2008 agreement, which was signed for 30 years and can be prolonged for 10 more years.
