Russia and the international community simply should not hinder the Armenian servicemen's efforts to effectively restrain the aggression of Azerbaijan, Russian political expert Andrey Areshev has told ArmInfo when commenting on the latest statement of the Armenian Deputy Defense Minister Davit Tonoyan.
When commenting on the death of three civilians in Tavush province of Armenia and four servicemen of the NKR Defense Army, Davit Tonoyan said that such actions of Azerbaijan will force Baku to negotiate on a ceasefire agreement on new terms.
"The most important thing is not to hinder the Armenian servicemen's efforts aimed at restraining the sabotage and other aggressive actions initiated by Azerbaijan. Today it is the most correct way out of the current difficult situation on the border and on the line of contact, which may claim more and more lives, including civilians' lives," says Areshev.
The expert thinks Baku is unlikely to unleash a wide-scale war. Nevertheless, he says that the situation may run out of the sides' control.
Areshev notes that there are a lot of factors explaining the aggressive steps of Baku. Along with the external factor, he points out the impulses in the domestic life of Azerbaijan, particularly, the intra-clan showdowns.
"The domestic economic problems also may cause an intra-elite competition in Azerbaijan, which possibly affects the situation in the conflict zone," he says.
This year has seen unprecedented intensification of shelling of Armenian villages by Azerbaijan and the Azeri sabotage attacks on the territory of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. On September 24 alone, the Azerbaijani troops shelled Berdavan and Paravakar villages in Tavush province, killing three civilians. On September 25, four servicemen of the NKR Defense Army were killed in artillery shelling by the Azeri armed forces. As of September 30, the tension has not subsided and the conflicting parties keep reporting new victims.
