The world must be informed about the tragic events that took place in the Azeri cities of Sumgait, Baku, Kirovabad and Maraga in the late 1980s as they were a follow-up on the Armenian Genocide committed by Turkey in 1915-1923, Chairman of the Shushi Charity Foundation Bakur Karapetyan told journalists on Wednesday.
He said that now that Armenia is preparing for the 100th year of the Armenian Genocide, Azerbaijan and Turkey are getting increasingly active and are using all possible means to distort the truth about the events that took place in the village of Khojalu and to convince the world that it was a genocide.
"By doing this they are just trying to distract the world community's attention from the Armenian massacres in Sumgait, Baku, Kirovabad and Maraga," Karapetyan said.
He presented a book entitled Sumgait Diary: Mar 27-Apr 5, 1988 and said that it is being translated into English to a sponsor from Nagorno- Karabakh Serzh Aryan.
The Armenian massacres in Sumgait took place Feb 26-29 1988 and claimed 53 lives. The Soviet authorities did nothing to prevent the killings, nor did they do anything to punish those guilty.
