Georgia's aspiration to NATO strengthens
international security and is not aimed against any sovereign state, reads a
statement of President of Georgia, Giorgi Margvelashvili, which was
disseminated on Thursday, February
19. Earlier, Foreign Minister of RF
Sergei Lavrov stated that Russia would take corresponding measures if NATO made practical steps aimed "at dragging"
Georgia into the alliance.
"Georgia's European and Euro-Atlantic
integration are a historical choice, which the Georgian national has firmly
determined and defended not once. This
is one of the pledges, I was granted the presidential mandate by the Georgian people
for ", reads the President's statement.
It is stressed in the statement that
Georgia's aspiration to NATO was conditioned only by a wish to ensure
"stability, development, great democracy and success in the country".
"This aspiration (to NATO) serves to
strengthening international security and is not aimed against any country's
sovereign interests. Democratic,
developed and secure Georgia must be
acceptable for all states, interesting in development of cooperation and
stability in the Black Sea region and in the South Caucasus", is noted in
the statement.
