"In its capacity as the co-chair of this group (OSCE Minsk Group), Russia is, of course, ready in these difficult days to provide all possible assistance to Azerbaijan and Armenia in finding ways to peacefully resolve disputed issues, including using the capabilities of parliamentary diplomacy," Matvienko said in a statement.
At the same time, the Speaker of the Federation Council called on all parties to the conflict in Nagorno- Karabakh for an immediate ceasefire. "The situation is extremely dangerous, it is fraught with escalation into a full-scale military conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which are equally close and friendly to Russia and other CIS countries," she said in a statement, RIA Novosti reports.
Matvienko noted that this conflict does not and cannot have a military solution. "In this regard, I would like first of all to call on the parties to an immediate ceasefire. Any escalation will only mean new casualties, including among the civilian population, which are not justified by any political considerations," the Federation Council Speaker said.
