The delay of Armenia's joining Eurasian Economic Union is not conditioned either by technical reasons, which have been already settled, as the leadership of the country assures, or by the economic ones, as a small volume of the trade and economic relations between Armenia and Nagornyy Karabakh ($20-30 million) can have neither a positive nor negative effect at the huge market of the Eurasian area, the first president of Armenia Levon Ter-Petrosyan, told ilur.am portal.
He said the delay has political reasons. "It is no secret, that the EAEU's member-states have put a strict ultimatum against Armenia about opening of the check point between Armenia and Nagornyy Karabakh. And if Armenia, which has already damaged its relations with Europe because of refusal to sign the Association agreement, does not fulfill this ultimatum, it will also damage the relations with the countries of the Customs Union, and will find itself in a political and economic vacuum. But in case of setting a check point at the border to the NKR, the relations between Yerevan and Stepanakert will worsen, and Nagornyy Karabakh will panic", - Ter-Petrosyan concluded.
o note, Armenia had to join the EAEU in July of the current year. But later the terms were delayed till October 2014,
