France-based committee for political prisoners in Armenia has addressed Pope Francis with a request to petition Zhirayr Sefilyan's release.
The Committee alarms that Artsakh War Hero and initiator of New Armenia front Zhirayr Sefilyan was detained on June 20. The Committee says Sefilyan is a political prisoner who joined the other persons who were arrested for their political views and opposing the ruling regime in Armenia. The Committee urges the Pope not to remain indifferent to the problem and discuss it with Armenia's leadership.
Meantime, Pope Francis is on his way to Armenia. He is expected to meet with President Serzh Sargsyan and Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II and the priesthood.
On June 20, 2016, Zhirayr Sefilyan was detained on suspicion of organizing a criminal group. 8 persons face charges of acquisition and keeping of weapons and ammunition. 6 have been arrested and 1 is wanted. According to the Special Investigative Service of Armenia, Sefilyan and his supporters were planning to seize buildings of state importance in early April. Sefilyan was transferred to a penitentiary after the Court chose arrest as a measure of restraint against him, Thursday.
