Armenia's accession to the Eurasian Economic Union is a fait accompli and the republic will shortly follow the EAEU rules. All protests against this fact are senseless convulsions, Levon Ter-Petrosyan, the first president of Armenia, leader of the Armenian National Congress (ANC) said at today's rally of the 4 opposition forces (Armenian National Congress, People's Party of Armenia, Prosperous Armenia Party, and Heritage Party).
Ter-Petrosyan advised all those who object to Armenia's EAEU membership to look at Ukraine. "That prosperous and well-to-do country is in a deep political and economic crisis. However, Ukraine is a rich country and I am sure that it will shortly manage to overcome this situation and enter upon the path of development again. However, even if 10% of the Ukrainian events reoccur in Armenia, it will be wiped off the world political map. Therefore, the forces protesting against Armenia's accession to the EAEU, should not push the country to the abyss or try to spread anti-Russian sentiments for their own interests", he said. "The fact that Armenia has joined the EAEU due to Serzh Sargsyan's untalented policy does not at all mean that the country will cease its further existence. I am sure that thanks to new authorities Armenia will be able to gain welfare and European values even in the EAEU", he added.
He thinks that the opinion that Armenia will lose its sovereignty following its accession to the EAEU is groundless. "And who says that Armenia would not lose its sovereignty by signing the Association Agreement with the European Union? I am sure that in that case the loss of sovereignty would be bigger, because accession to any international organizations implies obedience to the rules of the organization", he said.
He thinks that in the EAEU Armenia will not be less sovereign than Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus. "I know, after my speech I will be blamed for Russophilia. Never mind, I have strong nerves and I am a realist", said the first president of Armenia.
