Eurasian Economic Union is a political project, the former chairman of Armenian Central Bank, Bagrat Asatryan, said at today's press-conference.
He hopes that in October as well as in future Armenia will not sign a document on joining this international structure. Asatryan is confident that Armenia's joining EEU has only one purpose - political reproduction of the authorities of the country. He thinks that Armenia will gain nothing else from this structure, especially that today the countries of the Customs Union and EEU have been demonstrating negative results in the main directions. The situation will worsen in a year, he said and added that instead of choosing an opportunity of free development, official Yerevan has chosen extremely doubtful opportunities. The only positive thing is that Armenian citizens are more and more critical to the Customs Union year by year. 80% of Armenian citizens were for the country's joining the Customs Union last year, but a year later - only 57%. "In another year, the great majority of citizens will be against Armenia's joining the Customs Union", - Asatryan said. He recalled that last year Russia used to say about the intentions of China, Chile and Turkey to join the CU, but nothing of the kind. "At present, even Russia is more concerned not about the CU but the possibility of preserving of the system in the conditions of sanctions of the European Union.
On February 3, 2014 Armenia published a roadmap for accession to the Russia-led Customs Union, which Yerevan has pledged to join as Moscow seeks to deepen economic ties across the former Soviet Union. The document contains 150 different conditions that must be fulfilled before Armenia can join the economic alliance of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan.
Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan announced in September 2013 that his country would join the Customs Union after a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
