The ethnic cleansing, massacre and mass killing of Armenians in 1915 are a clear example of Genocide, German President Joachim Gauck said a few minutes ago during an ecumenical service in Berlin.
He said that the fate of Armenians under the Ottoman rule made the 20th century a horrible chapter in the history. The President of Germany compared the Armenian Genocide with the Holocaust, for which Germany is responsible.
To note, German President Joachim Gauck has for the first time characterized the mass killings of Armenians under the Ottoman rule as genocide.
On 24 April 2015, Armenians worldwide commemorate the centennial of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire, which claimed 1.5 million Armenian lives.
