Residents of 7 Armenian villages have blocked Yerevan-Aparan highway as a protest against building of hydroelectric power plant.
As Pre-parliament reported, residents of Ushi, Ohanavan, Artashavan, Karbi, Saghmosavan, Yerznka, and Yeghvard villages have blocked the highway, and demanded to stop construction of a hydroelectric power plant (HPP) nearby Aparan Reservoir. Governor Sargis Sahakyan of Aragatsotn Region came to speak with the protesting villagers. He tried to convince the villagers that the construction of the HPP is halted, but the villagers, said it was not.
According to experts, small power plants are dangerous for the ecological systems, as regulating releases are not taken into account. Moreover, absence of fish-passes hinders fish spawning, including Sevan trout.
