Baku. The human rights activist Elchin Namazov has been
arrested for 15 days. This administrative punishment was imposed on him on
November 25 by the decision of the Khatai District Court of Baku, which found
him guilty of not subordinating police. This was announced by his brother Akram
Namazov.
At
the same time, the office of E. Namazov was searched and the documents were
confiscated, including judicial records, in which he was held as a
defender. The arrested is contained in
the General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime at the Ministry of Internal
Affairs and he is not allowed a lawyer. All this gives reason to believe that
law enforcement agencies may prepare criminal charge against him at the end of
the term of his administrative arrest.
Namazov is a former lawyer and among his
clients there were political activists.
In 2011, he was expelled from the Bar, when defending the rights of the
youth activist of the party Musavat, Rufat Hajibeyli, who was arrested for
taking part in an anti-government protest in Fountain Square in Baku on 2 April
of the same year. After that, Namazov was
engaged in human rights protection and had access to trials in civil cases as a
legal representative.
