On April 23 German ambassador to Armenia Reiner Morell has told the journalists that Germany's policy and Chancellor Angela Merkel's stance on the Armenian Genocide cannot be affected by any phone calls from Turkey.
According to the ambassador he does not know which word president Joachim Gauck is going to use in his statement on April 24, yet he believes in the president's correct approach. On April 24 Bundestag will be voting on the resolution on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. "I cannot predict the outcome of the voting, however, the previous text will be edited. We need to wait for a while", he said.
He has added that no phone calls from Turkey can affect Bundestag and Merkel's stance on this issue. "I believe that whatever is done or said tomorrow will not be aimed against Turkey, it will be dedicated to a historic fact", he said. According to him, Germany is neither proArmenian nor proTurkish. "We are trying to foster the dialogue between the two countries", he summed up.
To note, on April 24 Bundestag will be considering the resolution on the recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey. Reportedly, on April 22 Turkish Prime Minister Davutoglu and Angela Merkel had a telephone conversation during which the Turkish official had asked Merkel not to use the term "genocide" in the draft resolution. Christiane Wirtz, a spokeswoman for Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the conversation's profile had been quite low. Yet she said she had no idea if the Turkish official had expressed his disapproval concerning the German government's stance on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
