Some economic provisions will be included in the new Armenia-EU agreement, German Ambassador to Armenia Reiner Morell said at a press conference on June 1.
Ambassador Morell said that Armenia assumed a number of commitments when deciding to join the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU). But there are certain areas Armenia and the European Union can cooperate in. He added that it is for the experts to determine the scope and the areas for partnership. The diplomat pointed out that the sides will keep taking measures to combat corruption, facilitate the visa regime, and improve the judiciary.
The ambassador thinks that Armenia and the EU have agreed a number of provisions to continue the negotiations once the European Parliament provides the relevant mandate.
Reiner Morell pointed out that at the Eastern Partnership (EaP) Summit in Riga, the EU demonstrated that EaP remains an important platform. He added that the EU will keep supporting the six EaP countries in reforms but it is for the countries to decide the areas. He stressed that the EU will apply a tailor-made approach to each of the partner states with due regard for their specificity and ambitions.
He stressed that Germany gives high priority to the tailor-made approach. Germany has learned the lessons of the Vilnius summit and seeks to promote the cooperation and benefit from the cooperation, he said.
The diplomat added that each country has its own interests. For instance, Azerbaijan seeks to foster strategic cooperation, while Armenia is interested in developing democratic values.
He noted that the EU seeks to create a zone for common values and approaches and that the partnership will not be directed against a third party.
