At an April 22 meeting in Yerevan cross-bench member of the British House of Lords, CEO of an organisation called the Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust (HART) Caroline Cox has told journalists that sooner or later Turkey will recognize the Armenian Genocide and that wlll be an important occasion for the Armenians.
According to the baroness, both Anglophone media, as well as British and German governments have positively changed their attitude towards the recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
"The recognition of the Genocide often subordinates to national interests of several countries - that is not normal. I have been fighting against this for many years", said Cox. At the same time she believes there are several reasons for Ankara to deny the Armenian Genocide. "The sense of shame for the past is the ultimate cause. They do not want to smirch their generations. Meanwhile, Turkish authorities could have chosen another point of view - believing that the recognition of the Armenian Genocide might strengthen their international credibility", she said adding that Turkey's concern over the recognition is related to Armenia possible territorial demands.
Cox has also added that U.S. president Barack Obama's stance on refusing to characterize the 1915 events as genocide does not surprise her. Nevertheless, the expressed hope that one day the U.S. would recognize the Armenian Genocide.
She believes that Pope's recognition of the Genocide might cause the intensification of the international recognition of the crime.
