Armenia should have abstained from voting on Ukraine's resolution, Armenian MP from the Prosperous Armenian Party, ex- foreign minister of Armenia Vartan Oskanian says in a statement.
The statement disseminated by Oskanian's Office says that the resolution submitted by Ukraine and adopted by the majority of votes considers the Crimean referendum to be invalid. Armenia cannot object to this because it also defends the peoples' right to self-determination and expression of will. On the other hand, Armenia itself has been negotiating with Azerbaijan for 23 years after the referendum in Artsakh. So, Oskanian thinks that Armenia should have abstained from voting on Ukraine's resolution, thereby stressing its compelling stand.
To note, in a vote that reaffirmed Ukraine's unity and territorial integrity, the United Nations General Assembly adopted on March 27 a measure underscoring that the mid-March referendum in Crimea that led to the peninsula's annexation by Russia "has no validity" and that the parties should "pursue immediately a peaceful resolution of the situation." By a vote of 100 in favour to 11 against (Armenia, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Korea, Nicaragua, Russia, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela and Zimbabwe), with 58 abstentions, the 193- member Assembly called on all States, international organizations and specialized agencies not to recognize any alteration of the status of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol on the basis of the 16 March referendum "and to refrain from any action or dealing that might be interpreted as recognizing any such altered status."
