Non-availability of the relevant law hinders effective fighting domestic abuse, co-chair of the "Resource centre of women" NGO, Lara Aharonyan, told ArmInfo correspondent.
She informed that according to the data of international experts, one out of five women in Armenia suffer any type of violence (physical, psychological, etc.). As for the official data of the Armenian Police, 700 cases of domestic abuse were registered in Armenia in 2013, including 7 cases of murder, as a result of which 12 children became orphans.
She also added that public organizations, which show aid to the victims of domestic abuse, receive 5-7 calls for a week. "This is evidence of the fact that women trust in us and hope for help", - Aharonyan said.
She thinks that the fact that the Armenian society started openly discussing the domestic abuse topic, is a progress. Thanks to that, an opinion has been formed in the society that domestic abuse is unacceptable and is a crime.
She regrets that in 2013 the government of Armenia declined the draft law "On domestic abuse". "The domestic abuse is a problem of the society but not women", - the expert said.
According to experts, it is more difficult to reveal the cases of domestic abuse in the regions of Armenia, as many women prefer to keep silent about man-handling in the family.
