Following the April 9 meeting of the incumbent and the first presidents of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan and Levon Ter-Petrosyan, the latter's "groundwork on Karabakh" may turn to be useful in the new conditions, says Sergey Markedonov, a Russian political analyst.
Talking to ArmInfo, he said that these conditions are specified and set not only in Yerevan but also outside it. Although the negotiations between the two presidents would have created a sensation yet not so long ago, the April incidents showed that external challenges and protection of the national interests help the opposition and the government blur the tactical boundaries in the domestic policy and strategic ones in the international policy.
Markedonov believes that the April flare-up in Karabakh necessitated national consolidation. In his words, it is important now, when the military phase of the conflict has been suspended, to promote its interests in the negotiations where the situation is not easy either.
"The blitzkrieg failed, but the Azerbaijani army did not crash down when clashing with the Karabakh army. In addition to the complicated, cautious and balancing stance of Moscow, as much accurate stance of the West and Ankara's solidarity with Baku, the situation requires consolidation of the intellectual resources inside Armenia. It is impossible to underestimate this process," the analyst said.
