ArmInfo. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's statement during the meeting with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko that Azerbaijan was founded by his father Heydar Aliyev resembles a situation when a football player scores an own goal, Vice Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Eduard Sharmazanov has told ArmInfo.
"The latest statement by Aliyev demonstrates the inconsistency of his previous statements that Karabakh and even Yerevan with its 2792-year-old history are part of historic Azerbaijan. If Azerbaijan was founded by Heydar Aliyev, as Aliyev the junior says, then its history is nearly 20 years old. It appears that this time Aliyev has scored an own goal," Sharmazanov says.
When speaking of the regular Azerbaijani-provoked escalation in the Karabakh conflict zone, Sharmazanov supposes that this may be the result of Baku's resistance to the pressure exerted on it during the Karabakh negotiations. "Aliyev himself has recently confessed that pressure is exerted on Baku during the negotiations. Probably, in this way Azerbaijan is trying to resist that pressure. But in any case, the bellicose methods of Azerbaijan are unacceptable. There is no alternative to peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict. This is the opinion of not only the Armenian side, but also the international community.
