ArmInfo.Today Armenia marks the 25th anniversary of independence. Festivities will take place throughout the republic. A military parade will be held in Republic Square in Yerevan at 11am. The parade will feature military hardware that includes Iskander missile systems, Buk surface-to-air missile systems, Smerch heavy multiple rocket launchers, as well as drones and Mi-29 and Su-25 planes. The parade will also feature the detachments of the Armenian Armed Forces, Military Police, Peacekeeping Brigade, Separate Special Mission Brigade, the NKR Defense Army, Police Troops of Armenia, Frontier Troops of the Armenian National Security Service, representatives of the 102nd Russian military base in Armenia, as well as the cadets of the Military Institute named after Vazgen Sargsyan, the Military Aviation Institute named after Armenak Khanferyants, and the students of the Military and Sports College named after Monte Melkonyan.
In the evening, a gala concert will be held at the Karen Demirchyan Sport and Concert Complex. The representatives of the political leadership, civil society and diplomatic missions in the country will attend the concert. Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan will deliver a speech at the event.
“The concert ‘Generation of Independence’ will tell about the achievements of independent Armenia. As many as 700 children from all over the country will perform classical compositions by Armenian composers on the occasion of the 25th anniversary in a combined orchestra and choir,” says Arthur Poghosyan, Deputy Minister of Culture of Armenia.
To note, on September 21, 1991, by the decision of the Supreme Council of the republic, a referendum on Armenia’s withdrawal from the USSR and creation of an independent state was held. Nearly 99% of the electorate gave their votes in favor of independence. The Parliament officially proclaimed the independence on September 23.
