Saakashvili Meets with Georgian Militaries in Afghanistan

Tbilisi. President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili visited Afghanistan on Monday, February 20 and met with Georgian militaries who participated in the peacekeeping operation under command of the International Security Assistance  Force (ISAF), the President's official page in Facebook social net reports.

Together with Defence Minister of Georgia Bacho Akhalaya President visited the Georgian base "Shukvani in Helmand  province, he flew there  by the helicopter of the U.S. marines.

                "Today he (Saakashvili) together with Georgian militaries patrolled on the armored vehicle a section in Helmand province", the statement reads.

Saakashvili addressed the Georgian militaries and awarded Vice-Colonel  Pridon Elbakidze, Captain Paata Nakani, Senior Lieutenants Giorgi Pilia and Beka Kelenjeridze as well as Corporal Giorgi Lomidze with the medal of the Defence Ministry of Georgia "For Dedication for the Motherland".

President's visit to Afghanistan lasted for some hours.

                Georgian militaries have been serving in Afghanistan  under ISAF command since August 6, 2009.  12 Georgian militaries  died in  Afghanistan since that time.
