Plenary Session on EU-Georgia Associated Agreement to be Held in Brussels

Tbilisi.  The eighth plenary session on EU-Georgia Associated Agreement will be held on Tuesday, February 21, in Brussels with the aim of coordination of the text of the document, deputy Foreign Minister  of Georgia Nino Kalandadze stated at the briefing on Monday.

                The Georgian delegation at the meeting will be headed  by the main negotiator with EU, deputy Foreign Minister of Georgia Tornike Gordadze, the EU delegation will be led by  Gunnar Wiegand, head of the European Commission's Unit for Relations with Russia as well as the acting director for Eastern Europe, Southern Caucasus, and Central Asia.

                "This session is of special importance from the point of view of Georgia's rapprochement  with the European Union. We can say the cooperation between Georgia and EU continues actively", Kalandadze stressed.

                According to her, issues of the political dialogue, reforms, security, justice and freedom will be in the focus at the forthcoming meeting.

The seventh plenary session on EU-Georgia Associated Agreement was held in October 2011 in Tbilisi.

The Council of Foreign Ministers of 27 states of the European Union approved frames of talks and granted the European Commission a mandate for holding talks on bilateral association agreements between EU and Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia.

The first plenary session was held in July 2010 in Batumi. The talks were opened officially with participation of President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashviliu and EU High Commissioner for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, First Vice-President of the European Commission Catherine Ashton.

                The associated agreements will replace acting bilateral agreement on partnership and cooperation between EU and Georgia.
