Hovhannes Tumanyan's flat in Tbilisi to be sold for $145,000

  • Thursday, February 16, 12:24

The scandal over the Tbilisi flat of the famous Armenian writer Hovhannes Tumanyan appears to be over.

President of the Union of Writers of Armenia Levon Ananyan says that Mayor of Gyumri Vardan Ghukasyan will buy it for $145,000 on Feb 22 to later grant it to the Armenian community of Tbilisi.

The scandal followed the reports that the owner of the flat Anzor Lezhava was going to sell it for being turned into a hostel.

The house where Tumanyan had an apartment was built in 1854. The granddaughter of the writer Irma Safrazbekyan says that the house is in a very bad condition: the roof leaks, the stairs are broken. A few years ago the Municipality of Tbilisi repaired the foundations and the walls.
